About the Artist:
BRENDA WIMBERLY Brenda Wimberly has received praise for
her precision and expressiveness in opera, oratorios, and song recitals. Her
opera roles include staged or concert performances with the West Coast
Lyric Opera, Marin Opera, Los Angeles Concert Orchestra, Shreveport Opera,
and Houston Ebony Opera Guild. She has performed recitals in Louisiana,
Ohio, Arkansas, California, Texas, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina,
Nevada, Nassau Bahamas, and has appeared as guest soloists with the Instituto
Veracruzano de Cultura with performances in Boca Del Rio, Cordoba,
Orizaba, San Adres Tuxtla, Xalapa, and Veracruz, Mexico. She has
performed as guest soloist with the Austin Civic Chorus, New Dimensions
Chorale, Houston Masterworks and the Brazeal Dennard Chorale.
Additionally, Ms. Wimberly has appeared as guest soloist with the
Glendale, San Diego, Southeast Los Angeles, Shreveport, Scott Joplin,
Houston, San Francisco, Nevada, and Detroit symphony orchestras.
A frequent competition winner, she has garnered many vocal awards:
winner, National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition—Texoma
region; Singer of the Year, Shreveport Opera; winner, Opera Guild of
Southern California Competition; national finalist, Loren Zachary
National Competition of Los Angeles; national finalist, Metropolitan
Opera Competition of New York; and national finalist, University of
Michigan Concerto Competition. She was a two-year consecutive member
and Grand Finalist Winner of the prestigious Merola Young Artist
Program at San Francisco Opera, where she was honored as the first
recipient of the Chisholm Foundation award established in honor of
Leontyne Price. She had the additional honor of appearing with Miss
Price on the CBS program Sunday Morning. A resolution was presented by
the Texas House of Representatives that declared her voice a “state
treasure.”
A Louisiana native, she was educated in the Caddo Parish
School system and commenced formal training under the tutelage of Bobby
Wiggins at Southern University—Shreveport campus. She received the
Bachelor of Music degree from Prairie View A&M University and
pursued further studies at the University of Texas—Austin, University
of California—Los Angeles, and the American Institute of Musical
Studies—Graz, Austria. Her professional development includes auditions
and study in Munich, Vienna, and Salzburg (Austria). She completed the
Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of
Michigan and currently serves on the faculty of Fayetteville State
University.
